Per "BASS VIKING" Mathisen

Per “BASS VIKING” Mathisen, born 7 October 1969 in Sandefjord,
Norway, is a Norwegian jazz musician, bass-player and composer,
known from collaborations with great jazz musicians and some of the
most famous musicians on the planet. Some names worth mentioning
are Terri Lyne Carrington, Geri Allen, Gary Thomas, Robben Ford,
Bill Evans, Keith Carlock, Jon Christensen, Bill Bruford, Alex Acuña,
Gary Husband, Ralph Peterson, Nguyen Le and Terje Rypdal. 


Mathisen was educated on the Jazz program at Trondheim
musikkonservatorium 1991–93, followed by a period at the Berklee
School of Music in US, and he returned to Norway in 1994. He has
been a freelance electric and acoustic upright bass-player since 1994,
currently based out of Oslo and Vienna - has performed in as many as
45 countries worldwide and is often referred to as Norway’s answer to
Jaco Pastorius on electric bass and Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen on
acoustic upright bass.


In 2013 he played with Joseph Williams, Bill Champlin and Peter
Friestedt`s All Star Band. Mathisen has joined forces on the stage with
one of the most recognized Scandinavian jazz names in the world,
Swedish guitarist, Ulf Wakenius. The Klangforum Wien, an Austrian
chamber orchestra, based in Vienna at the Konzerthaus, invited
Mathisen to play on the latest opera of an Austrian composer
Bernhard Lang‘s opera.
Mathisen has released 16 highly acclaimed CDs as a leader, co-leader,
and producer.
